Feb. 19-25

James 1:17-18

This week we pray for:

  • Students to develop as whole human beings who love God with all their hearts, souls, minds and strength as they engage in their curricular and extracurricular activities here.
  • Student athletes as they participate in various Pirate sports; for protection, joy, community and growth as men and women.
  • Tuesday’s President’s Coffee that brings staff together to celebrate years of service, connect with one another, and hear important university updates. We pray for unity and encouragement for all Whitworth employees.
  • The celebration of the 134th anniversary of Whitworth’s founding in February 1890. We pray with thanksgiving for the vision of George Whitworth to form a college in Sumner, Wash., to pursue “that learning and culture of heart and mind that make the finished scholar.”
  • One Pine Day on Feb. 20 as the Whitworth community near and far rallies together to support various important needs to serve our students. We pray with thanksgiving for all the generous donors who have supported Whitworth over the years and continue to do so.
  • Campus worship this week:
    • Chapel community worship on Tuesday and Thursday; as the faculty, staff and students gather in worship and as Forrest Buckner preaches on Tuesday. We also pray for Thursday’s service as we come together to sing, pray, hear a staff testimony and celebrate the Lord’s Supper.
    • Tuesday night’s Hosanna service, as students gather for worship through music, prayer and reflection; for real encounters with the Living God by the Spirit of Jesus.
    • Wednesday night’s student-led Awake gathering, designed to help students who don’t yet know Jesus to have an opportunity to explore who God is and why that matters. We pray that God would give the team of student leaders his love for their peers as they serve in the ministry.
    • Monday, Wednesday and Friday’s daily reflective morning prayer services.
  • Tuesday’s Off-Campus Programs Fair; that God would be providing for and leading students to the Jan Term and May Term options that are most fitting for them to grow, learn and become equipped to honor God, follow Christ and serve humanity.
  • Wednesday’s Student Leadership Fair; that God would raise up student leaders to serve, lead and grow through involvement in the many wonderful student leadership opportunities at Whitworth. We pray that God would call forward faithful, diverse, gifted and sincere resident assistants, campus ministry coordinators, cultural diversity advocates, health education advocates, community engagement specialists, Awake leaders, campus worship leaders and more for the 2024-25 school year.
  • Lectures this week by Ruth Bancewicz (“Loving Science, Loving God”) and Timothy Pickavance (“Knowledge for the Love of God”); that God would use these lectures to equip our community to love and worship God with our whole being, especially our minds.
  • This weekend’s Honors Scholarship Weekend; as prospective honors students (and their families) visit campus and get to know Whitworth. We pray for strength, love and the joy of God’s Spirit for the enrollment services staff; we pray for God’s guidance for these prospective students and families; and we pray for God’s provision for Whitworth in the fall 2024 incoming class.

Thanksgiving:
Thank you, unchanging God, that you are the source and giver of every good gift we receive. We recognize your consistent power and love every time we look to the night sky and see the distant stars and galaxies that you have made. We repent of the ways that we have taken credit for your generosity, and we pray that our lives would be permeated with gratitude in increasing measure. Thank you most of all for your love revealed in Jesus Christ, your ultimate gift of love for the whole world. Amen.
