Sept. 18-25

Mark 3:13-19

This week we pray for:

  • Students as they settle into the rhythm of studies and activities. We pray for motivation, discipline and joy in learning and time management!
  • Students who are struggling with physical or mental health difficulties – that they would know God’s love, strength, healing and provision. We also give thanks for our wonderful counselors in the counseling center and medical professionals in our health center and pray for strength, wisdom and love by God’s Spirit as they provide care and guidance for students.
  • Monday’s kickoff of the Wellness Lecture Series in which professors offer lectures on wellness for our first-year students, including spiritual well-being, healthy eating, service, well-being as the death of the false self, and more. We pray that God would use them to equip our students for mind-body-heart-soul health at Whitworth and beyond.
  • Tuesday’s President’s Coffee that brings staff together to celebrate years of service, connect with one another and hear important university updates. We pray for unity and encouragement for all Whitworth employees.
  • Thursday night’s Weyerhaeuser Center lecture by award-winning author and Professor of Mathematics Francis Su, who writes and speaks about the dignity of human beings and the wonder of mathematical teaching. We pray that God would use his lecture to help us integrate our learning and God’s desire for human flourishing.
  • Our wonderful Sodexo staff team that feeds so many, washes thousands of dishes and serves coffee drinks that enable community (and late-night studying), doing it all with smiles on their faces! We particularly give thanks for Sodexo Whitworth’s general manager, Megan Helm, and operations managers Dan King and Chet Hunt as they continue to provide such able and faithful service to the Whitworth community.
  • Campus worship programs this week:
    • Chapel Community Worship on Tuesday and Thursday as the faculty, staff and students gather in the chapel to worship God and explore our theme for the semester, “GOOD NEWS: Jesus in the Gospel of Mark.” We pray for the Rev. Lauren Taylor, campus pastor for discipleship, as she preaches on Tuesday. We also pray for Thursday’s service as we gather to sing, pray, hear a testimony and receive Communion as a community. We pray that God would continue to bring out the first-year students in particular.
    • Tuesday night’s Hosanna service in the chapel as students gather to worship God together through music, prayer, interaction and reflection.
    • Wednesday night’s student-led AWAKE gathering in the HUB Multipurpose Room, as a community of students explore who God is, who they are and why that even matters as an outreach to our campus.
    • Morning Prayer on Monday and Wednesday as Professor Ben Brody leads a time of Scripture reading, silence, prayer and song in solidarity with Christians around the world.

Thanksgiving:
Living God, we thank you that Jesus called together a group of disciples that included such remarkable difference. Lead us to be the people of God who also embody unity in Christ, people who are with Jesus and live to help make him known in our words and deeds. Give us the mind of Christ and an awareness of Jesus, our Head, as we participate in your redemptive work in the world by the power of the Spirit. Amen.
