No Assets Allowed: Jesus and the Children

Scripture: Mark 10:13-16

This week we pray for:

  • Students to build on the successes of the first half of the semester and to persevere in their academic or co-curricular responsibilities. We pray for wisdom, strength, and the ability to say “yes” and “no” to the right things.
  • Students as they complete this week of classes and go on Fall Break, that they will find refreshment with family and friends. We pray for safety for those traveling and joyful rest for all.
  • Faculty as they engage in the continued work of growth and community at the Faculty Development Day, engaging in intentional training and discussion while students are on Fall Break.
  • All our veterans and veteran dependents who are attending Whitworth, including Thursday’s Camaraderie of the Armed Forces Club meeting. We pray for flourishing for these Whitworth community members in traditional undergraduate programs, continuing studies and graduate studies.
  • Student athletes, for safe travel, meaningful community and character development as they give their all in their athletic endeavors.
  • Whitworth’s Office of Church Engagement’s Earth Ministry conversation about caring for creation as people of faith. We pray that God would be leading Whitworth and the Spokane faith community in their desire to put faith into action for the well-being of communities and the environment.
  • Tuesday’s “Breaking Boundaries: Mutual Ministry, Mutual Marriage” forum conversation with Rev. Linda Bartholomew and Professor Adam Bartholomew, addressing questions on what it means to be a couple in ministry.
  • Wednesday’s staff development gathering, as staff join together for mutual encouragement, community and discussion of the “Why.” We pray for all of our staff members in their support of the mission of the university.
  • Campus Worship this week:
    • Tuesday’s Chapel Community Worship as Lauren Taylor preaches in our series, “This Changes Everything: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of Mark”
    • Tuesday night’s student-led Hosanna worship gathering
    • Wednesday night’s student-led AWAKE outreach ministry gathering
    • Thursday’s Chapel Community Worship gathering for music and the Lord’s Supper
    • Monday, Wednesday and Friday reflective Morning Prayer services
    • Life Groups, as 16 groups of students gather with a staff or faculty mentor for Christ-centered community, Bible study and prayer

Thanksgiving:

Lord, may we live more like children, free in your love. Free us from pride and pretense. Many times we try to be something that we are not, seeking to be more spiritual to impress you with our words and lengthy prayers. We are grateful that you release us from all the futile and unnecessary attempts to prove ourselves worthy of your love. Lead us in childlike humility, knowing that you are our Father, and we can run into your loving arms as we trust you. Amen.
