Human Rulers and God the Creator

May 6-13
Genesis 1-2

This week we pray for:

  • Strength and focus for students in this final week of classes this semester.
  • God’s provision and peace for graduating students who are lamenting the end of their time at Whitworth and searching for employment or discerning other opportunities.
  • The seeds of the gospel that have been sown this semester to find fertile soil in the lives of all Whitworth community members, and that those seeds would bear fruit 30, 60 and even 100 times what was sown.
  • Dolores Humiston, Whitworth’s associate vice president for human resources, as we celebrate her retirement after 16 years of service to Whitworth. We give great thanks for the ways that God has used Dolores to support the mission of Whitworth through her thoughtful, faithful, excellent and loving work here.
  • Jim O’Brien, general manager of Sodexo’s operations here at Whitworth for the past 35 years, as he heads toward retirement in August. We give thanks for the generous, joyful and gracious service of our campus’s daily bread that has occurred under Jim’s leadership over these 35 years.
  • Tuesday’s Summer Fellowship Program Commissioning Service as 72 Whitworth students are commissioned to be sent out to serve in various churches and ministries all over the world by the Whitworth Office of Church Engagement. We give thanks for each student and pray that God would use them and transform them as they live and serve with God’s people this summer.
  • The incoming class of students who have made their decision to attend Whitworth in the fall of 2019. We pray with great thanksgiving for God’s provision for all involved, including meeting Whitworth’s enrollment goal for the second year in a row.
  • Tuesday’s school of business lecture by Abbot Tryphon, leader of the Brotherhood of the All-Merciful Saviour Monastery on Vashon Island, as he discusses “The Business of Monasticism.”
  • Campus worship this week:
    • Chapel Community Worship on Tuesday and Thursday as faculty, staff and students gather in worship and Dean of Spiritual Life Forrest Buckner finishes our series of “Reading the Bible with Jesus” on Tuesday. We also pray for Thursday’s service as we come together outside in the Loop to sing, pray and celebrate the Lord’s Supper.
    • Tuesday night’s final Hosanna service as students gather for worship through music, prayer and reflection.
    • Wednesday night’s final student-led AWAKE gathering as students explore who God is, who they are and why that even matters.
    • Monday, Wednesday and Friday’s reflective Morning Prayer services.

God of Creation, we are grateful that in the beginning you created all things, including us, and you saw that it was very good. Thank you that you have called us as your image bearers to steward and rule over your good creation. Thank you for the extravagance of this created world. Lead us in your ways that we might participate in your gracious work that promotes the flourishing of all that you have made, that all people and all creation might worship and glorify you in increasing measure. Amen.
