Job’s Suffering and the Holy and Good God

Feb. 25-March 4
The Book of Job

This week we pray for:

  • Local churches that students attend in and around Spokane, that God would bless those worshiping communities and provide meaningful worship, service and community for students attending them.
  • Students to grow in the skills of deep intellectual inquiry along with courageous and civil engagement with people who hold different perspectives.
  • Student athletes, forensics competitors and school of business competitors who represent Whitworth throughout the semester, for safe travels, joy, community and growth as the men and women God made them to be.
  • Monday evening’s Pop Up Lecture where Professor Dale Soden will speak on “Blackface: Racist Then, Racist Now” in response to recent national controversies.
  • The Staley Lecture by Princeton Theological Seminary Professor Bo Karen Lee, “The Wisdom of Weakness in Hildegard of Bingen’s Scivias,” that God would use this lecture to equip Whitworth community members with skills in how God’s strength is made known in our weakness.
  • Various important staff and faculty searches that are underway. We pray that God would send workers to Whitworth who will serve God and forward the Whitworth mission. We pray for unity and clarity for the search committees overseeing the search processes.
  • Monday’s Faculty Assembly as faculty gather for important governance work and connection.
  • Tuesday’s President’s Coffee as staff gather to hear an update from President Taylor, celebrate years of service and be in community.
  • Campus worship this week:
    • Chapel Community Worship on Tuesday and Thursday as faculty, staff and students gather in worship and as Forrest Buckner continues our series on the Old Testament by preaching on Tuesday. We also pray for Thursday’s service as we come together to sing, pray and celebrate the Lord’s Supper.
    • Tuesday night’s Hosanna service as students gather for worship through music, prayer and reflection.
    • Wednesday night’s student-led AWAKE gathering as students explore who God is, who they are and why that even matters.
    • Monday, Wednesday, and Friday’s reflective Morning Prayer services.
  • This weekend’s Honors Scholarship Weekend as prospective honors students and their families visit campus and get to know Whitworth. We pray for strength, love and the joy of God’s Spirit for the admissions staff; we pray for God’s guidance for these prospective students and families; and we pray for God’s provision for Whitworth in the fall 2019 incoming class.

Thank you God that you are a God who is not manipulated or coerced by human choices or behavior. Thank you for your abundant and unmerited love for your creation that stretches to every corner of the globe and every corner of the human heart. Thank you that you are the sovereign Lord and the loving Lord. Lead us in deeper trust in you today and this week, regardless of what circumstances come, and lead us in love for those around us who need to know your sovereign love today. Amen.
