“Redefining Community”

Oct. 8- Oct. 15
Matthew 15:21-28, 32-39

This week we pray:

  • For life-giving relationships for all students in which students find meaningful and deep connections, learn from those who are different, and spur one another on toward love and good deeds.
  • For students’ health and our wonderful Health Center staff members as they support student health needs.
  • With gratitude for Whitworth’s board members who are on campus for their biannual meetings this week. We give thanks for their generous and wise support of Whitworth’s mission, and we pray for God’s guidance and unity for them in their governance work.
  • For the President’s Leadership Forum as President Beck A. Taylor and the Whitworth community welcome retired U.S. Army General and former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell to the Spokane Convention Center on Friday. We pray that the event would provide generative conversations and engender positive community development in the broader Spokane community.
  • For Whitworth’s One Big Weekend as Homecoming and Family Weekend celebrations occur together over the weekend. We give thanks for the classes celebrating their reunions, and pray for rich times for families to connect with their Whitworth students, especially first-year students.
  • With gratitude for the beautiful newly opened Beeksma Family Theology Center that will be officially dedicated Thursday. The center now houses Campus Ministry, the Theology Department, and the Office of Church Engagement. We also give thanks for the wonderful refurbishments in the existing Seeley G. Mudd Chapel and pray that God would be glorified through all the important work and interactions that will occur in this building.
  • With gratitude for the installation of Forrest Buckner as the Storm Family Dean of Spiritual Life on Thursday and the ways that this endowed position will enable Campus Ministry efforts and outreach in support of Whitworth’s Christ-centered mission for untold years ahead. We pray that God would use this endowment in ways beyond what we could ask or imagine for his purposes and glory.
  • For Campus Worship this week:
    • Tuesday’s Chapel Community Worship as Kent McDonald preaches in our series, “Righteousness Redefined: Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew.”
    • Tuesday night’s student-led Hosanna worship gathering.
    • Wednesday night’s student-led AWAKE outreach ministry gathering.
    • Thursday’s Chapel Community Worship gathering for music and the Lord’s Supper.
    • Monday, Wednesday and Friday reflective Morning Prayer services.
  • For ongoing “Why Whitworth” events as prospective students and families visit Whitworth. We pray for wisdom and peace for students and families, and we pray that God would provide for the Whitworth Class of 2023.

Thank you, Father that you are the God who calls us together in community across borders. Thank you for Jesus’ ministry that revealed the broad scope of God’s reconciling work to the whole world, and we pray that we could live as God’s reconciled and reconciling people as we participate in Christ’s work in the world by the power of the Spirit.
