“Redefining the Gospel”

Sept. 10-16

Scripture: Matthew 4:17-25

This week we pray for:

  • Students in their first full week of classes; that they will enter into a rhythm that nourishes them spiritually and relationally as they begin the rigorous discipline of academic pursuits. We also pray for those first-year students in need of employment; that they would find meaningful work that God uses to form them in their time at Whitworth.
  • Student-athletes as they practice and compete in various sports; for safety, community and growth into the men and women God made them to be.
  • Creativity, passion and joy as faculty and students engage in the process of teaching and learning as part of Whitworth’s mind-and-heart mission.
  • The first week of campus worship programs:
    • With deep gratitude for the beautiful, newly opened Beeksma Family Theology Center that now houses campus ministry, the theology department and the Office of Church Engagement. We also give thanks for the wonderful refurbishments in the existing Seeley G. Mudd Chapel and pray that God would be glorified through all the important work and interactions that will occur in this building.
    • Morning Prayer on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
    • Chapel Community Worship on Tuesday and Thursday as faculty, staff and students gather to worship God together as we explore our theme for the semester, “Redefining Righteousness: Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew.” We pray for Forrest Buckner, dean of spiritual life and campus pastor, as he preaches on Tuesday. We also pray for Thursday’s service as we come together to sing, pray and receive the Lord’s Supper. This Thursday we pray especially for the commissioning service for any students who are serving in the broader Spokane community (like student teachers, Young Life leaders and students serving through the Dornsife Center for Community Engagement).
    • Tuesday night’s Hosanna service, a student-led gathering providing intentional space for students to worship through music, prayer and reflection.
    • Wednesday night’s student-led AWAKE gathering, as students explore who God is, who they are, and why that even matters and invite others to do the same.
  • Whitworth’s Outdoor Recreation programs as students are invited to explore and enjoy God’s incredible creation in community. We pray for safety, fun, adventure, meaningful relationships and awe before God’s work.
  • Whitworth’s admissions team members as they begin recruitment travel to high schools and college fairs throughout the western United States. We pray for safety, endurance, joy, trust in God and the ability to represent Whitworth’s mission well. We pray that God would be calling future students to Whitworth through their good work.

We give thanks for the incredible cosmic good news of Jesus Christ. Thank you that Jesus unveils the reality of God’s reign by bringing spiritual, physical and social restoration. Lead us to participate wholeheartedly in God’s Kingdom work and witness to God’s Kingdom reign through the power of the Holy Spirit.
