Finals Week and Commencement Weekend

May 14-20

Jeremiah 29:11: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”

This week we pray:

  • For students who are taking final exams to be encouraged and to have wisdom, knowledge and understanding over the next several days.
  • For graduates to be thoroughly equipped for every good work and be prepared in season and out of season as they move forward into the next phase of their lives.
  • For safety for students’ families as they travel across the country and from other parts of the world to celebrate the graduation of their loved ones here at Whitworth University.
  • For faculty to be strengthened and encouraged as they proctor and grade final exams and projects while caring for the students in their classes.
  • For all staff as they provide support in countless ways in their various roles on campus, from support staff to custodians, student life to grounds, human resources to the business office and more.
  • For our final Morning Prayer for the spring semester on Monday as we pray with other Christians around the world lifting up our hearts to the Lord.
  • For President Beck A. Taylor’s continued wisdom and understanding as he leads Whitworth University.
  • With thanksgiving for God’s generous and abundant provision in calling together next year’s first-year class of students who have committed to Whitworth.
  • For Commencement Weekend:
    • The families of all graduates – traditional undergraduate students, continuing studies students and graduate students – that they would be filled with gratitude at this significant milestone and be encouraged in trust toward God with whatever lies ahead.
    • The senior service of Communion & Commissioning on May 18 that includes faculty and student reflections on shared experiences of Christian faith and as students recommit their lives to God’s service and are set apart as Christ’s servants in the world.
    • Graduate commencement services on May 19 as graduate students receive their well-earned degrees.
    • Baccalaureate service on May 20, as we gather as a broader community to worship God together on undergraduate commencement day. We pray for all the students who will be leading in the service and for Associate Professor of Theology Jonathan Moo as he preaches.
    • Undergraduate commencement on May 20, with thanks to God for all the graduates and all those leading.

Lord, we pray for all those who have met the challenge and kept the faith to the commitments of their studies. We thank you for the success of their journey. We thank you for granting them focus and direction and then strength and endurance. You created the knowledge and understanding they have mastered. You have created the curiosity and capacity for determination that led them in pursuit. All these good things came from you. We are most thankful and grateful for our graduating students, and most of all we are grateful to you, Lord, for we know the plans that you have for us. Amen.
