I AM: God’s Self-Descriptive Name

Sept. 18-24

This week we pray for:

  • Our students as they enter this second full week of class, that they will find good rhythms of rest, study, community and extracurricular involvement, while being open to God in all that they do.
  • Community Building Day, as over 1,000 Whitworth students, staff and faculty engage in meaningful community service activities throughout Spokane County on Wednesday.
  • Our new faculty members as they adjust to a new place and their fall courses, that they will be encouraged, strengthened, and have a growing love of learning and love for Whitworth students.
  • Faculty Scholarship Forum that begins this week and occurs twice a month through the semester, as Whitworth faculty share recent scholarship and receive feedback. We pray that Whitworth faculty could continue to contribute to the intellectual vitality of our world, in service to God, in love for neighbor and in pursuit of God’s truth.
  • Campus worship this week:
    • Tuesday’s Chapel Community Worship as Forrest Buckner preaches in our series, “God Made Known: Jesus’ I AM statements in the Gospel of John”
    • Tuesday night’s student-led Hosanna worship gathering
    • Wednesday night’s student-led AWAKE ministry gathering
    • Thursday’s Chapel Community Worship gathering for music and the Lord’s Supper
    • Monday, Wednesday and Friday reflective Morning Prayer services.
  • Whitworth’s President’s Leadership Forum, as hundreds of Spokane community members gather to hear Michael Lewis, financial journalist and New York Times best-selling author. We pray that through this forum and other ongoing activities that Whitworth would continue to enrich Spokane by helping our community engage in critical and careful thinking, civil discourse and effective action.
  • A culture of environmental stewardship in gratitude to God for his good creation. We pray particularly this week for the Kipos (Students Advocating Environmental Justice) club’s annual Harvest Festival in the Whitworth Community Garden.

Lord, we thank you for revealing your name to us. Thank you that you are the Great I AM who is present, living and active yesterday, today and forever! We are grateful that we have the opportunity to know and proclaim Your name now and forevermore. Amen.
