The Calling of Peter

Feb. 8-14

Scripture:
Mark 1:14-20

This week we pray for…

  • our students to come to know the true meaning and purpose of their lives and to be reminded continually of their need for our Savior.
  • students who are experiencing despair. We ask that they would find the encouragement they need and that they would feel the love of God in their lives.
  • Campus Worship:
    • for Tuesday’s community-worship service as we begin the spring semester with the theme Tasting the Goodness of the Lord: Growing Alongside Peter. Forrest Buckner will preach on Mark 1:14-20 this week.
    • for Tuesday’s student-led Hosanna service, as participants discover the renewing grace of Jesus Christ through Scripture, reflection, and song.
    • for the Ash Wednesday service that marks the beginning of Lent, which invites us to reflect upon and share in Christ’s sufferings as we look toward his death on our behalf and his Easter Sunday Resurrection.
    • for a special Ash Wednesday student-led AWAKE service as students gather to explore who God is, who we are, and why that matters, through Scripture, community, and song.
    • for Thursday’s community-worship service as we gather around the table to celebrate the Lord’s Supper and commission this semester’s student-teachers into their ministry in classrooms throughout the Spokane area.
  • the Why Whitworth program and the first Honors Colloquium Scholarship Weekend, as we welcome prospective students to Whitworth, knowing that God will lead some of them here this fall and beyond, providing both for their families and for Whitworth.
  • our 19th annual Gospel Explosion, with the theme I Gotta Praise, I Gotta Praise, And I Gotta Let It Out, I Gotta Praise! We pray for the local choirs, praise teams, and students who will participate in leadership this year.
  • Saturday’s celebration of the life of Wanda Cowles, to be held at 2 p.m. in Cowles Auditorium, where members of Wanda’s family and the community will gather to remember and trust in the hope of the Jesus’ Resurrection as we commemorate Wanda’s rich life and legacy.

Thanksgiving:
Loving God, as you called Peter, we thank you for calling us. Open our hearts to spread the good news, the Gospel, and to continue to follow you. Give us the courage to speak the name of Jesus to those who are close to us and to those who are far away. And please grant us the generosity and the deep desire to share your love with those who need it most.
