In the Beginning

Oct. 29-Nov. 4

John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

This week we pray…

  • that as the effects of fall – shorter days, longer nights and colder weather – are felt on campus, the entire Whitworth community will be enlightened by the presence of God’s spirit to sense hope instead of despair and motivation instead of lethargy. Pray that we will welcome God’s work of change in our lives even as God brings change to the creation during this season.
  • that as Fall Break ends, our students will return safely, that they will be renewed and refreshed, and that they will pursue the rigors of academic study during November with diligence and passion.
  • for Tuesday’s chapel service, as Mike Sardinia (Biology) shares with us from the Word of God in John 1 and as our students come together for Hosanna, a time of reflection, prayer and worship. Please pray also for Thursday’s service of holy communion, with our student-led praise and worship team.
  • for those attending the majors’ fair on Wednesday. Pray that as students talk with their faculty advisors about their majors, they will be able to make good decisions that will affect their future in terms of God’s calling upon each of their lives.
  • for those who attend the seminary fair on Thursday, as we welcome representatives from theological schools across the country. Ask that our students listen with attentive hearts for opportunities to explore options for postgraduate study in theology and ministry.
  • for both the musicians and the audience members at Saturday’s Jazz Ensemble concert featuring Kenny Barron. Ask that everyone who participates and listens will be drawn into the beauty and wonder of God’s gift of music in all of its rich and inviting forms.
  • for safe journeys for our athletes and other students who are traveling this week throughout the Pacific Northwest.
  • for members of the Whitworth community who have lost loved ones during this fall season; ask that they will know the comfort of God’s spirit and the support of the Whitworth community.
  • for the success of Initiative 2.3 of the Courage at the Crossroads 2021 Strategic Plan, as Whitworth promotes compelling opportunities for advanced collaborative learning, creative expression, research, cross-cultural engagement, leadership development, and other enriched learning activities to attract and retain high-achieving students.

Lord, we thank you that you have loved us from the very beginning of time and have continued to love us through your son Jesus, the living incarnation of your spoken Word. Your Word and your presence assure us that your mercies are new each morning and that we always have opportunities for  new beginnings, no matter how difficult the way. We are so thankful for your presence with us each and every day.
