Welcome to the 2012-13 Whitworth University prayer guide, On Bended Knee.

More than 550 people signed up to receive this guide during the 2011-12 academic year, and we look forward to more people joining the prayer circle to intercede regularly on behalf of the students, staff, and faculty of the university. We thank you in advance for your part in praying for Whitworth during this academic year as we seek, in the words of our founder, to honor God, follow Christ, and serve humanity.

For those of you who are returning to On Bended Knee, the format will look quite similar with a few minor changes. For those of you just joining us, the guide is designed to provide prayer prompts for each week, directed by our various calendars and the rhythm of life here at Whitworth.

This year we are going to include weekly information about our chapel sermon series for each semester as well as the scriptures we will be using each Tuesday in our worship service. Our theme for the fall semester is In the Beginning…God Created. The Bible begins with the story of creation – God bringing into existence the entire universe in splendor, diversity, and beauty. God continues to act, shining light into darkness, bringing order out of chaos and transforming death into new life. This fall in chapel we will trace this trajectory of creation as we explore creation past, creation present, and creation future. Join us each Tuesday as we hear God’s word from Mike Sardinia (Associate Professor of Biology), Julia Stronks (Professor of Political Science), Beck Taylor (President), Mindy Smith (Associate Campus Pastor for Small Group Ministry), and Terry McGonigal (Dean of Spiritual Life).

We also want to make you aware that we are not just soliciting your prayers for us, but we are eager to pray for you. In our campus ministry program, Whitworth Coordinator of Ministry and Multicultural Affairs Stephy Beans coordinates and leads our prayer ministry both for our on-campus community and for all the friends of the university. If you have a prayer request, please send it to Stephy (sbeans@whitworth.edu), and she we will share it with the campus community via the Prayer Support Page on Pirate Port, Whitworth’s web portal. We saw God work some amazing miracles last year in and through this prayer ministry, and we anticipate what God will do in us and through us this year. Thanks for being a faithful partner in prayer with us.

The title for this prayer guide, On Bended Knee, comes from the Apostle Paul’s prayer found in the letter to the Ephesians, and it is this prayer that guides us as we pray together.

Ephesians 3:14-21
For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge —that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
